Banning of Rape Video Game

  • Submitted by: Shona Robison, Dundee City East, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 06 March 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-16203

That the Parliament condemns outright the video game, Rape Day, which is a PC game planned to be released through the online gaming distribution platform, Steam; understands that the game’s developer advertises that the game lets gamers “verbally harass, kill and rape women”; denounces this incredibly offensive game that it considers depicts, glorifies and normalises the violent sexual assault and murder of women; understands that the Video Standards Council is limited in its actions due to the current legislation under which it operates, namely the Video Recordings Act 1984, which it understands only applies to physical, boxed products, with games distributed online not being captured under the legislation; demands, therefore, that Valve bans the release of this game on its platform, Steam, and that other online platforms ban the game as well, and encourages the UK Government to review and strengthen legislation in this area.
