Cannabis-derived Medications

  • Submitted by: Daniel Johnson, Edinburgh Southern, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 19 June 2018
  • Motion reference: S5M-12868

That the Parliament welcomes that the Home Secretary has permitted Billy Caldwell to receive cannabis oil medication; regrets that the basis for doing so is limited to 20 days on an emergency basis; understands that cannabis-derived medications have been found to be effective for the treatment of epilepsy, MS, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other conditions; urges the Home Office to consider regulating the use of cannabis-derived medicines based on evidence and clinical opinion; considers it absurd that, while morphine and diamorphine can be prescribed by clinicians, cannabis-derived medicines cannot; notes that cannabis oil preparations containing cannabidiol (CBD) can legally be purchased and consumed but are not sanctioned to be prescribed or administered as medication in Scotland; welcomes that Sativex use has been approved by the Welsh Government, and urges an application be brought forward for the provision of Sativex and Epidiolex, which it considers that constituents in Edinburgh Southern and Edinburgh Western believe to be vital for the treatment of their children with epilepsy.
