Professor Newby

That the Parliament congratulates Professor David Newby, British Heart Foundation (BHF) John Wheatley Chair at the BHF Centre of Research Excellence at the University of Edinburgh, on being awarded the Mackenzie Medal at the 2018 British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) Awards, which were held on 6 June 2018, notes that the Mackenzie Medal is bestowed by the BCS for outstanding service to British cardiology; understands that Professor Newby’s research has been pivotal for gaining an understanding as to how the heart and blood vessels react in heart disease, particularly in relation to heart attacks and heart failure; acknowledges that Professor Newby’s work has examined how smoking and air pollution from traffic can trigger heart attacks, which has helped to identify factors causing heart disease and their harmful effects, and wishes Professor Newby and his team at the University of Edinburgh success with their future research.
