GFG Alliance Provides Major Boost to Lochaber Economy

  • Submitted by: Donald Cameron, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 31 January 2018
  • Motion reference: S5M-10222

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement by the GFG Alliance to invest £120 million in its Lochaber smelter site near Fort William, following planning approval from The Highland Council for a new alloy car wheels factory, which is part of the investment package; understands that, if the factory is delivered, it could start producing new alloys by 2020 and will lead to the creation of 400 jobs; believes that the site would supply at least one fifth of all the wheels required by UK vehicle manufacturers; notes that the factory would use aluminium produced from the Lochaber smelter, which was bought last year by GFG Alliance’s Liberty firm, and considers the investment in Lochaber by GFG Alliance to be of significant importance to the wider region and the Scottish economy.
