Mouth Cancer Action Month

  • Submitted by: Adam Tomkins, Glasgow, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 07 November 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-08699

That the Parliament notes that November 2017 is Mouth Cancer Action Month; commends the British Dental Association Scotland and the Oral Health Foundation on their work to raise awareness of oral cancer; understands that Scotland has almost double the incidence of the condition than England, and that people from deprived areas are up to three times more likely to be affected; with Glasgow recording Scotland's highest rate; believes that 90% of cases are preventable, with tobacco, alcohol and human papilloma virus (HPV) infections identified as the main risk factors; considers that early detection is crucial, as survival rates significantly decrease if diagnosis is delayed; believes that, while the condition kills more people in Scotland than car accidents, awareness remains worryingly low, and welcomes the work of the dental profession on educating other health professionals and the public about the causes and symptoms.
