UK Libraries Week

  • Submitted by: Ruth Maguire, Cunninghame South, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 04 October 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-08109

That the Parliament welcomes the first UK Libraries Week, which will take place from 9 to 14 October 2017; understands that the celebration and showcasing of libraries aims to ensure that as many people as possible are inspired to visit a library, discover what is on offer and encourage their friends and family to get involved; recognises that libraries provide much more than just book-lending, and often act as community hubs for different types of activities and events, including history groups, digital support and training, craft fairs, coffee mornings and drop-in sessions with charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support; acknowledges the work of libraries in the Cunninghame South constituency, including the Harry Potter-themed book group at Irvine Library, which offers arts and crafts and other activities based on the series, the Bookbugs reading club at Stevenston Library, Bourtreehill Library's digital services workshop and Kilwinning Library's work in supporting community groups such as Promoting Kilwinning and the Kilwinning Retirement Club; understands that the awareness week has been established following feedback from library users who called for an expansion of the previous single day celebration, National Libraries Day; believes that will allow for a more expansive and exciting programme of events to be developed; commends the hard work and dedication of library staff across the country all year round, and wishes them all a successful UK Libraries Week.
