Provision for Active Travel at Sheriffhall Roundabout

  • Submitted by: Alison Johnstone, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 13 July 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-06714

That the Parliament notes local opposition to Transport Scotland’s preferred option, Option B, for the Sheriffhall roundabout redevelopment in Midlothian; recognises that the junction currently presents a key barrier to walking and cycling in the region; understands that local opposition is based on a failure to include sufficient infrastructure for active travel in this major transport development, as it understands is Scottish Government policy, as well as the strong likelihood of Option B contradicting efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; believes that Option B represents the worst of all options for pedestrians and cyclists in the area, and calls on Transport Scotland to recognise the benefits that a bridge for active travel can offer in terms of increased safety and removing key barriers preventing greater uptake of walking and cycling in the region.
