Johnson’s Brexit as Liberation Remarks

  • Submitted by: Stuart McMillan, Greenock and Inverclyde, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 23 February 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-04229

That the Parliament denounces the words of Boris Johnson, who is reported to have likened the UK withdrawal from the EU to “liberation”; is mindful of the history of oppression and authoritarian regimes in Europe, of which the UK and Scotland played a significant role in ending, and acknowledges Swedish MEP Anna Maria Corazza Bildt’s objections; reiterates that Scotland voted by 62% to 38% to remain in the EU; calls on the Foreign Secretary to retract what it considers his offensive comment, and urges him to consider his words carefully as the UK, it considers, is about to embark on tearing Scotland and the UK away from the EU.
