That the Parliament acknowledges the Unison Scotland report, Hard Lessons. A survey of Scotland's school support staff, which provided the results of a large-scale survey of support staff working in schools across the country; is concerned by the main finding that support staff are experiencing a lack of time, lack of resources and heavy workloads, which means that they are struggling to maintain standards for pupils; notes that it highlights jobs cuts; believes that there has been a reduction in staff and resources at the same time as pupil numbers and education support needs are increasing; is concerned at the high level of anxiety reported from classroom assistants, who are expected to undertake a range of personal care and medical interventions; calls on local authorities and the Scottish Government to address the issues regarding training and safety that the report highlights staff having raised; acknowledges that over 90% of the respondents identified as female and that the majority have held their posts for 11 years or more; commends everyone who participated on providing what it sees as insightful testimony; recognises that the support staff are vital members of the education team in each school, and believes that, with the reported funding crisis affecting schools across Scotland, the Scottish Government should consider this report carefully.
