  • Submitted by: Mark McDonald, Aberdeen Donside, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 02 December 2013
  • Motion reference: S4M-08450

That the Parliament welcomes plans from Northfield Academy in Aberdeen to establish a three-year Patrons of Reading scheme with comic writers Metaphrog; notes that, during this programme, pupils will have a chance to discuss and develop ideas with working authors to inspire other children to read for fun; congratulates the academy on what it sees as its innovative choice of patrons, the graphic novelists, John Chalmers and Sandra Marrs; understands that this will be the first time that graphic novelists have been chosen to be Patrons of Reading; believes that the role of a Patron of Reading is to serve as a school's special, designated children's author who will work with the school to raise the profile of reading for pleasure with pupils, parents and staff, and encourages other schools to consider establishing patrons of reading schemes.
