Food Insecurity and Cost of Living Crisis

  • Submitted by: Mercedes Villalba, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour.

That the Parliament recognises the recent Food Insecurity and Cost of Living Report 2025 from the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU), which outlines the cost-of-living pressures facing trade union members; notes its findings, which show that six out of 10 food workers and members of BFAWU state that wages are insufficient to meet their basic needs, including food and energy; further notes that, according to the report, nearly half of its members are feeling food insecure, and three out of 10 say they do not have enough food to properly feed themselves and their families; considers that food insecurity results in lower-quality, less nutritious diets and reliance on community and food banks to provide sufficient food; believes that the report must serve as a wake-up call to both the UK and Scottish governments, and to local authorities, to do more to alleviate cost-of-living pressures faced by people across Scotland; considers that the report’s findings demonstrate the need to incorporate the human right to food into Scots Law, as suggested in the proposed Right to Food (Scotland) Bill, and pays tribute to the Right to Food campaign, which is led by Ian Byrne MP, and the campaign's Food Commission, which, it believes, will provide a comprehensive roadmap for introducing Right to Food legislation across the UK.
