  • Motion reference: S6M-18799

That the Parliament pays tribute to the Honourable Mrs Ruth Leslie Melville MBE OStJ from Brechin, who sadly passed away aged 84 on 31 July 2025; acknowledges what it sees as her outstanding service and dedication to public life as a local independent councillor and Provost of Angus, but also her international charitable work, which included bringing children from Belarus who were affected by the Chernobyl disaster over to Scotland on holiday, and closer to home where she campaigned to Save Our Stracathro hospital and also made a lasting contribution by campaigning to have fallen Royal Marines from RM Condor recorded on official memorials; commends with admiration her appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2004 for services to the community of Angus, and, in 2008, her appointment as an Officer (Sister) of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem (OStJ); understands that Ruth was born in Aberdeen before moving with her parents to Trinidad and returning to attend Inverurie Academy and Edinburgh Art School before going on to marry her late husband, Ronald Leslie Melville, and set up home in Angus to raise their family; recognises that, in later life, Ruth served as a lay preacher and a Sunday School teacher with The Church of Scotland across Angus, and offers its sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by her remarkable work and enduring spirit.
