  • Submitted by: Claire Baker, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 19 August 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-18519

That the Parliament congratulates Dunfermline’s Caroline Weir on her inclusion in the shortlist for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first ever Scot to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or Feminin; notes that the former Pittencrieff Primary and Dunfermline High School pupil began her footballing career playing at Pitreavie before joining Hibernian, and going on to play for Arsenal, Bristol Academy, Liverpool and Manchester City; believes that the nomination is recognition of another strong campaign for Real Madrid, in which Caroline came back from a period of injury to score 14 times in all competitions; understands that Caroline has won 112 caps and scored 19 goals for Scotland, as well as representing Scotland at two major tournaments; highlights that Caroline is an ambassador for the Pars Foundation, a charitable organisation that runs community programmes on behalf of Dunfermline Athletic, involved in helping to grow the game and create opportunities for girls in football; notes that the Ballon d’Or has been presented by France Football since 1956 to honour those who it deems the world’s best performing player, with the Ballon d’Or Feminin first being presented in 2018; recognises that Scott McTominay is also among the Ballon d’Or nominees following his first season with Serie A title winners Napoli; sends its best wishes to both players ahead of the ceremony in Paris on 22 September, and wishes them continuing success in their footballing careers.
