The Passing of Coatbridge Teacher, Les Jenkins

  • Submitted by: Fulton MacGregor, Coatbridge and Chryston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 12 June 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-17932

That the Parliament notes with sadness the passing of ex-Coatbridge High School history teacher, Les Jenkins; understands that Les taught at Coatbridge High for over 30 years; believes that Les inspired an interest in history for generations of students, which persevered long after graduation; understands that, outside of his work as a teacher, Les completed a 35-year project that compiled the biographies of 863 individuals who lost their lives while serving during the First World War, and whose names are inscribed on the Coatbridge Cenotaph; notes that the biographies of the Coatbridge soldiers are contained in a series of folders, which are available in the local studies room at Airdrie library; commends this project, which ensured that the legacies of those who lost their lives during the First World War would not be forgotten; believes that teachers like Les are invaluable in fostering a sense of academic curiosity and interest in the past; praises all the positive work that Les has done for thousands of students and the general community of Coatbridge, and expresses sympathy to his family, friends, and all those whose lives were influenced by him for the better, following the sad news of his passing.
