  • Submitted by: Tess White, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 02 June 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-17747

That the Parliament congratulates NHS Grampian consultant breast surgeon, Ms Beatrix Elsberger, as she features in a new national portrait celebrating exceptional women; understands that the portrait is entitled Eleven Surgeons and features nine female surgeons still practising today as well as two pioneers in their field, Alice Hunter (1880s-1973) and Caroline Doig (1938-2019); notes that Eleven Surgeons is currently displayed in the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh museum as part of its Women in Surgery exhibition; believes that in more than 500 years of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, only three out of its 144 portraits feature women, and that the new, all-female portrait showcases a new chapter in a traditionally male-dominated profession; recognises that Ms Elsberger was recently recognised and awarded the prestigious Hunter-Doig medal by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, and congratulates Ms Elsberger for what it sees as her exceptional contribution to her profession and leading the way for current and future female surgeons.
