Ensuring Road Safety Through Regular Driving Assessments for Older Drivers

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Independent.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 11 March 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-16564
  • Current status: Fallen

That the Parliament welcomes reports that the UK Secretary of State for Transport is considering reviewing driving test requirements for older drivers; notes reports of tragic incidents that have occurred in Scotland where age-related impairments may have contributed to serious accidents; believes that, while many older drivers remain safe and competent, there is a need to ensure that all drivers maintain the necessary reaction times, mobility and awareness to drive safely; further believes that regular assessments, including vision and reaction tests, could improve road safety; considers that, while the current focus is reportedly on drivers aged 80 and above, there may be a case for lowering the age threshold to ensure earlier identification of those in need of support or retraining, and calls on the Scottish Government to engage with UK counterparts to explore enhanced testing measures and ensure Scotland’s roads remain safe for all users.
