Commending the Staffin Community Trust for Harbour Construction Initiative

  • Submitted by: Ariane Burgess, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 20 March 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12553

That the Parliament commends the Staffin Community Trust (SCT) for its outstanding efforts in leading the construction of a new harbour; recognises that a significant milestone was marked with the commencement of onshore construction works on 11 March 2024; notes that the SCT has successfully obtained licensing and planning approvals from Marine Scotland and the Highland Council; highlights the collaborative efforts of the harbour project steering group; celebrates what it sees as this significant step forward for the Staffin community, and recognises the tireless support and commitment demonstrated by both the steering group members and the SCT board over the past few years; acknowledges the comprehensive vision behind the harbour project, which aims to address the reported long-standing deficiencies in infrastructure that have disadvantaged the economic potential of the Staffin region, and notes that the new harbour will provide essential amenities such as secure boat storage, sheltered berthing, and improved access for the benefit of the local fishermen and aquaculture businesses, as well as local tourism, which it considers will contribute to the diversification of the local economy.
