Recognising Single Parents Day and Week 2024

  • Submitted by: Stephanie Callaghan, Uddingston and Bellshill, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 12 March 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12466

That the Parliament recognises that 21 March 2024 is Single Parents Day; considers that this day, and the week leading up to it, is a chance to recognise the strength and love offered by so many single parents in Scotland for their children, and to challenge what it sees as the stigma that is still unfairly faced by single-parent families today; acknowledges that around one in four families with children is a single-parent family; welcomes the efforts of One Parent Families Scotland and Fife Gingerbread, which are working alongside partners around the UK and Ireland to raise awareness of the experiences of single-parent families throughout the week and, indeed, every week; appreciates that the theme for Single Parents Week 2024 is "Recognition", which allows people to recognise single parents and all that they do, as well as recognising what it considers to be the need for wider support and structural change to improve the lives of single-parent families; welcomes that this includes a focus on recognising what it sees as the financial inequality faced by single parents, the need for childcare, the importance of mental health and wellbeing, and of community and connection; understands that nine in 10 single parents are women, and that gender inequality is a significant factor in the barriers faced by many single parents, and wishes all the best to those leading on Single Parents Week, and to all the parents involved in making their own voice heard during this time.
