University of Strathclyde Celebrates its Diamond Jubilee

  • Submitted by: Kaukab Stewart, Glasgow Kelvin, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 24 January 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-11946

That the Parliament joins together to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the University of Strathclyde gaining university status; understands that the late Queen Elizabeth II signed the Royal Charter at Balmoral in August 1964, ensuring that what had been the Royal College of Science and Technology would become the first university established in Scotland for nearly 400 years; further understands that Strathclyde had existed as an institution under various names since 1796, but that it was the royal seal that formally brought the University of Strathclyde into existence and opened the door for the research, learning and teaching, industrial engagement and informing of policy that it continues to practise; considers that the University of Strathclyde has never stood still throughout its history, and has continued to enhance and evolve the work that it does, often leading the way for others to follow; understands that the University of Strathclyde was the first, and still only, institution to win the UK University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards twice, and that it has won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize four times, been named European Entrepreneurial University of the Year at the Triple E Awards, and was named Scottish University of the Year in the Daily Mail University of the Year Awards 2024, and wishes the University all the best going forward.
