MacRosty Park Awarded Dementia Friendly Environment Accreditation

  • Submitted by: Jim Fairlie, Perthshire South and Kinross-shire, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 12 December 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-11626

That the Parliament welcomes that MacRosty Park in Crieff has been granted Dementia Friendly Environment accreditation; believes that the park is a vital community and green space, which has been a popular destination for residents, families and visitors for over 100 years; highlights that the space has seen a series of improvements to make it more inclusive, including the provision of new accessible maps at all entry and exit points, the installation of dementia-friendly signage, coloured waymarkers, and a contrasting toilet seat; understands that all benches were refurbished, new picnic benches installed and pathways throughout the park underwent maintenance; believes that these upgrades and improvements will help even more local residents, visitors, and particularly those living with dementia, enjoy MacRosty Park; further believes that the provision of accessible outdoor spaces is crucial to encouraging physical activity and personal connections to nature, as part of recovery and rehabilitation in care and community settings; notes that the improvements were delivered by staff at the Richmond House Care Home, with assistance from a local community health walk, Perth and Kinross Council Community Greenspace team, Friends of MacRosty Park and Paths for All; acknowledges that MacRosty Park is only the second park in Scotland to be given this status, after Kings Park in Stirling; further acknowledges that Paths for All, Scotland’s walking charity, is working with partners to develop more dementia-friendly and accessible environments across Scotland, and commends all involved.
