  • Submitted by: Sarah Boyack, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 13 November 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-11211

That the Parliament congratulates One World Shop on its 40th anniversary, which happened on 11 November 2023; understands that the shop, situated by St John’s Church on Princes Street, Edinburgh, is a pioneering retail hub for fair trade and sustainable products; considers that, since its inception in 1983, it has grown from a small store run by volunteers to a shop with a global impact; understands that the shop’s mission is to support artisans and farmers from around the world; commends One World Shop for its role in supporting the instigation of the Fairtrade Foundation and the introduction of fair trade goods in supermarkets in the 1990s, whilst also helping to set up the British Association of Fair Trade Shops and Suppliers; believes that the shop played a key role in establishing Edinburgh as a Fair Trade City in 2004; recognises what it sees as the strong links that the shop has with producer organisations in Bangladesh, India and Nepal, and wishes it good luck for the next 40 years.
