Belonging Boxes for Older Patients Helping to Keep Their Treasured Items in One Place

  • Submitted by: Monica Lennon, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 10 November 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-11137

That the Parliament welcomes an initiative spearheaded by Joanne Kane, staff nurse at University Hospital Hairmyres, to pilot a box that is being provided to every older person admitted to the hospital to hold their belongings; understands that Joanne, who is now fully qualified, was inspired when she attended a conference as a student on care for the elderly and heard about what other hospitals across the UK were doing to keep patients’ things in the one place; notes that the idea of the belonging box is to allow patients to have a dedicated box in which they can store their belongings, including important items like their glasses, hearing aids and dentures, all items that affect patients' senses such as their hearing, sight and taste, which are incredibly important to keep safe during their time in hospital; understands that, with the help of Elaine Morning, personal assistant to the Chief of Nursing, who sourced a local company to produce the boxes, Joanne managed to get the pilot up and running; commends Joanne for her dedication, and for undertaking extensive research in her own time while also obtaining her degree; wishes the pilot of the belonging boxes every success, and hopes to see the initiative rolled out to other hospital sites across Lanarkshire and in other NHS boards.
