River Trent Memorial, Grangemouth

  • Submitted by: Michelle Thomson, Falkirk East, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 28 September 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10652

That the Parliament recognises the memorial of the River Trent tragedy, which was held at Zetland Park in Grangemouth on 24 August 2023; understands that 10 young part-time soldiers, who belonged to the 131 Independent Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers, tragically lost their lives in the early hours of 28 September 1975 during a training exercise known as the "Trent Chase"; notes that this exercise was an 80-mile night navigation of the River Trent, aiming to improve watermanship, map navigation and water navigation; understands that, in extreme weather conditions, the boat carrying the squadron capsized following a power failure, which saw the navigation lights on the lock go out; recognises the Airborne Engineers Association for organising this memorial to the 10 young sappers from the area who lost their lives in 1975, and commends it for its work in supporting current and former members of the Corps of Royal Engineers.
