Support for Creeling

  • Submitted by: Mercedes Villalba, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 20 September 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10512

That the Parliament understands that opinion polling results show public support, on average, for the permanent allocation of 34% of Scotland's inshore waters to low-impact fisheries like creeling; considers that the creeling sector is important to the economic success of many of Scotland's coastal communities, such as those in the north east; believes that low-impact fisheries can operate in areas where dredging and trawling would be too destructive to seabed ecosystems, and urges the Scottish Ministers to work with coastal communities to designate substantial areas of Scotland's inshore waters for creeling and hand diving only, as well as appropriate areas for dredging and trawling and for nature restoration.
