That the Parliament recognises that 18 to 24 September is Organ Donation Week 2023; understands that the aim of the week is to raise awareness of the ongoing need for organ donors and to encourage more people to register to become an organ donor on the NHS Organ Donor Register and inform their loved ones of their decision; further understands that the NHS Blood and Transplant service is hoping to see buildings across the UK lit up in pink to mark the week and to inspire people to confirm their decision regarding organ donation; believes that, while Scotland has an "opt-out" system of organ and tissue donation, it is still important that people make their decision known by sharing their decision with family and friends, to avoid any doubt; understands that, due to a shortage of organs, there are on average 500 people in Scotland awaiting an organ transplant at any one time; recognises that organ donation can dramatically improve and save lives; understands that every organ donor has the potential to save up to nine lives; further understands that there is particular concern with regard to the availability of organs for those from ethnic minority backgrounds, and that around one third of people waiting for an organ are from ethnic minority backgrounds and the majority are waiting for a kidney, but are less likely to receive one due to a shortage of suitably matched donors, and encourages everyone to consider their own position with regard to organ donation and to discuss and share their decision with family and friends.
