  • Submitted by: Karen Adam, Banffshire and Buchan Coast, Scottish National Party.

  • Motion reference: S6M-10184

That the Parliament notes that the second annual Edinburgh Deaf Festival took place from 11 to 20 August 2023; understands that the festival offered more than 60 events for both deaf and hearing audiences, including drama, comedy, film, exhibitions, workshops and entertainment for children and young people; acknowledges that the festival aims to create an inclusive space for the deaf community through the use of sign language in all performances during the festival season in Edinburgh, and to encourage hearing people to discover the richness of deaf heritage, language and culture; further acknowledges that Heriot-Watt University was the festival’s interpreting sponsor this year; highlights that the university provided British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters for various performances and events at the festival; further highlights that Heriot-Watt University has been supporting BSL teaching and the training of BSL/English interpreters since 1995, and that Heriot-Watt is a leading university globally in the fields of sign language and deaf studies; recognises that BSL/English interpreters signed performances at the Edinburgh Deaf Festival and accompanied events by spoken English interpretation, which, it believes, helped improve integration alongside a cultural celebration of the deaf community, and wishes all performers, interpreters and organisers success at the festival in the future.
