That the Parliament notes the latest publication of data on injuries and deaths in greyhounds used for racing at regulated tracks across the UK in 2022, released by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB); further notes that there were 22,284 injuries and 2,718 deaths of racing greyhounds across the UK between 2018 and 2022; highlights that, despite the GBGB’s commitments to improve welfare standards at racetracks and reduce the number of injuries and deaths in dogs, the rate of injuries in 2022 was higher than it was five years ago; understands that there are inherent risks of injury and death associated with racing dogs anti-clockwise around curved tracks at 40 mph; considers that there remains one greyhound racetrack in Scotland, the unlicensed Thornton Greyhound Stadium, where, it believes, the number of injuries and deaths in dogs is left unreported, and where there is no official regulatory body present to ensure that foundational animal welfare standards are met, and commends the work of the newly-formed group of animal welfare organisations and volunteers coming together, under the #UnboundTheGreyhound campaign, to phase out greyhound racing in Scotland.
