White Armband Day 2023

  • Submitted by: Mercedes Villalba, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 31 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-09114

That the Parliament acknowledges that 31 May 2023 is the anniversary of the atrocities in Prijedor, Bosnia, which will be marked with a memorial event in Aberdeen, organised by Remembering Srebrenica Scotland, Aberdeen Mosque and Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire councils, to remember the genocide, rape and torture of 3,173 civilians in Prijedor, including 102 children and 256 women; understands that the victims, who were predominantly Bosnian Muslims, were instructed to wear a white armband or drape a white sheet from their homes to identify their ethnicity, and recognises what it sees as the hugely valuable work done by Remembering Srebrenica Scotland to share the stories of this period and combat hate speech and intolerance.
