Recognising the Work of Retiring PCS General Secretary, Mark Serwotka

  • Submitted by: Mercedes Villalba, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 25 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-09078

That the Parliament notes the announcement from Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) trade union, that he is to retire; recognises Mark's 23 years as general secretary of the union; understands that he joined the civil service as a benefits clerk, aged 16, and joined the union on his first day of work, and that he has represented workers in the union since becoming a union rep in 1980; recognises that, under his leadership, PCS is winning historically high votes in industrial action ballots, which beat what it sees as the anti-union ballot threshold; thanks Mark for what it sees as the support, guidance and leadership that he has given the wider trade union movement throughout his career, in particular during his term as president of the Trades Union Congress, following his election in 2019, and wishes Mark a healthy and happy retirement following a career of service to working people.
