Aberdeen FC and Gothenburg Greats Awarded Freedom of the City

  • Submitted by: Audrey Nicoll, Aberdeen South and North Kincardine, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 12 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08944

That the Parliament congratulates Aberdeen Football Club on being awarded the Freedom of the City of Aberdeen; understands that, for 120 years, Aberdeen FC has been a constant and important institution for Aberdeen and the north east; notes that, throughout that period, the club has won four Scottish Premier League division titles, seven Scottish Cups, six Scottish League Cups, the European Cup Winners Cup and the European Supercup; further notes that 11 May 2023 marked the 40th anniversary of the club’s European Cup Winners Cup win with a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid at the Ullevi Stadium, Gothenburg, led by the manager, Sir Alex Ferguson; recognises that Aberdeen FC goes beyond football in making a difference to the city, particularly through the hard work of the management team and volunteers of the Aberdeen FC Community Trust, whose most recent annual report states that over 4,000 children have been engaged by the charity to improve school attendance, along with it providing access to mental wellbeing learning, and giving over 2,000 meals to primary school children; understands that a ceremony took place at Pittodrie Stadium on 12 May 2023 to award the club and the “Gothenburg Greats” the Freedom of the City; congratulates all involved at Aberdeen FC past and present, and passes on its best wishes for future success.
