  • Motion reference: S6M-08233

That the Parliament congratulates Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH), which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2023; understands that SAMH can trace its roots back to 1923 and the pioneering work of Dr Kate Fraser CBE, from Paisley; further understands that Dr Fraser used her medical experience to improve the conditions and treatment of people with mental health problems at a time when women were expected to remain in the home, and mentally ill people were routinely shut away in workhouses or prisons, often beside criminals; notes that, from its inception, SAMH has championed community-based services as the backbone of mental health and wellbeing support, with one of its original aims being “to improve the mental health of the community and take all possible action in connection therewith”; understands that, as well as its community-based services, SAMH has been supporting people with mental health problems get into work since the 1920s, when the organisation helped to train young people and provided specialist support at employment centres; recognises that this help continues today in the form of assisting people with job applications and CV building, as well as interview preparations and in-work support; commends SAMH for all the work that it does to help people with poor mental health, and wishes the organisation, its staff and its volunteers every success for the future.
