Calorie Counts on Menus

  • Submitted by: Alex Cole-Hamilton, Edinburgh Western, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 07 February 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-07771

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the dangers of implementing calorie counts on menus, particularly for those affected by an eating disorder; understands that approximately 1.25 million people in the UK have an eating disorder and that this number is rapidly increasing; further understands that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental disorders in the UK; notes with concern the findings of research conducted by charity BEAT, that 93% of people think calorie counts on menus will have a negative impact on those with, or vulnerable from, an eating disorder; believes that there is little substantive evidence to indicate that calorie counts on menus lead to improvements in public health, and strongly urges the Scottish Government to reconsider any such plans to introduce calorie counts on menus.
