Lanarkshire Teacher Raises £20,000 and Installs Book Vending Machine at Primary School

  • Submitted by: Gillian Mackay, Central Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 13 January 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-07481

That the Parliament commends the Lanarkshire teacher, Lisa Sultana, for her outstanding efforts in raising over £20,000 and installing the first-ever book vending machine in St Bernadette’s Primary School in Motherwell; understands that the local charities, Loaves and Fishes foodbank, in East Kilbride, and St Bernadette’s foodbank, in Motherwell, as well as the National Deaf Children’s Society, benefited from donations; further understands that the book vending machine will distribute 560 books to children over the course of the year; understands that St Bernadette’s school is in an area of significant deprivation and poverty, where some children do not have access to the same resources as some of their peers, which inspired Lisa’s vision for the book vending machine to provide the children the opportunity to have access to a book of their choice; considers that support from the foodbanks and the book vending machine initiative will contribute to improving the children’s health and wellbeing, as well as helping to improve attainment, and congratulates Lisa on her efforts with the fundraising and book vending machine project.
