Islay’s Thirteenth Distillery Receives Green Light

  • Submitted by: Donald Cameron, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 30 November 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-07004

That the Parliament welcomes the news that Islay will see its thirteenth distillery open following the news that Argyll and Bute Council granted planning permission for the ili Distillery and visitor centre at Gearach Farm near Port Charlotte; understands that the new distillery will be the smallest of its kind on Islay and that it will be built to blend in with the natural environment surrounding it; further understands that the distillery aims to produce a target capacity of 200,000 litres of pure alcohol per annum; recognises the work of islanders, Bertie Nesselrode and Scott McLellan who are behind the project and their aim to produce a world-class, sustainable whisky; understands that the business will be offering a community benefit fund to ensure that Ileachs benefit from the new distillery; acknowledges the importance of whisky to the Scottish economy and the need, it believes, for more investment in the infrastructure of Islay to meet the needs of local residents as well as its burgeoning whisky sector, and wishes ili Distillery well for its future.
