Alcohol Sponsorship of Football Report

  • Submitted by: Joe FitzPatrick, Dundee City West, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 25 November 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06937

That the Parliament welcomes the publication of the report, Alcohol sponsorship of football: Examining the nature of sponsorship relations for professional football teams across countries with varied restrictions on alcohol marketing, which was carried out by the University of Stirling Institute for Social Marketing and Health, and was commissioned by Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP); recognises that alcohol was directly responsible for 1,245 deaths in 2021; understands that sports fans in Scotland are exposed to high levels of alcohol marketing at sporting events, both in person and via broadcast and that this influences how much and how often they drink alcohol; recognises that the report highlights that, in comparison to other European leagues with varying levels of restrictions, Scotland has a high proportion of alcohol industry sponsors; further understands that the report shows that countries with statutory controls do appear to have comparatively less alcohol sponsorship; recognises what it sees as the importance of the SHAAP-led Calling Time on alcohol sports sponsorship campaign, and supports calls for a total ban on alcohol sponsorship of sport, in order to protect the health of the nation of Scotland.
