Retirement of Larry Flanagan

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 10 November 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06663

That the Parliament congratulates General Secretary of the Educational Institute of Scotland, Larry Flanagan on his recent retirement; commends him for his achievements over a long and distinguished career, including recently receiving the Robert Owen Award for his contributions to the education sector; understands that Larry has dedicated his career in education to continually improving equality and wellbeing for students across Scotland, having spent 33 years as a classroom teacher before being appointed General Secretary of the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) in 2012 and has also since served on both Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) and Trade Unions Congress (TUC) general councils; further understands that Larry has continually supported the development and achievements of young people, through supporting schemes including the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which he continues to support at Hillhead High, in addition to authoring three English textbooks published by Leckie and Leckie; notes that Larry’s involvement in the EIS and wider trade union movement has been longstanding, which, it believes, demonstrates his passion for improving education in Scotland, first as a member of the union’s Executive Committee and then in his role as General Secretary, where he represented the union at various levels of education governance including working to deliver anti-poverty professional learning; thanks Larry for his significant contribution to Scottish education, and wishes him well in his retirement.
