Tom and Mary Harwood, Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Submitted by: Joe FitzPatrick, Dundee City West, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 09 November 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06655

That the Parliament congratulates Dundee husband and wife duo, Tom and Mary Harwood who have been recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Scottish Wildlife Trust’s - Trustees’ Awards for Volunteering 2022, for their contribution towards helping manage The Miley urban nature reserve in Dundee, which is part of a disused railway and is known as a quiet sanctuary for wildlife and wellbeing; understands that Tom and Mary have been volunteering since 2000, organising weekly litter picks and annual leaf clean-ups to prevent the reserve’s mile long path from being slippery during autumn and winter months; notes that plant sales, quiz sheets, identification books and binoculars are now available as a result of Tom and Mary's fundraising, which, it understands, supports local nursery and school children on their visits to learn about fauna and flora, and notes that the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s pursuit of a healthy, resilient ecosystem across Scotland is supported by the People’s Postcode Lottery.
