Election of Lula as the President of Brazil

  • Submitted by: Mercedes Villalba, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 04 November 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06528

That the Parliament congratulates Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on his election as the next President of Brazil; welcomes what it sees as Lula’s firm commitments to taking action to tackle the climate emergency and to promoting peace internationally; condemns the reported behaviour of incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, and his supporters; believes, from reports, that they were relentless in what it sees as their assault on the electoral process, including voter suppression and the use of violence; expresses concern at reports that the Brazilian state was used to try and secure victory for Bolsonaro including, it understands, federal police engaging in voter suppression activities in Lula voting areas across the country, and hopes that the Scottish Government will welcome Lula’s victory as a triumph for what it sees as progressive forces, and for the Brazilian people in defence of their democracy.
