Support the People of Pakistan

  • Submitted by: Sarah Boyack, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 06 September 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05831

That the Parliament notes with concern what it considers the unfolding humanitarian and environmental disaster in Pakistan, with a third of the country – an area the size of the UK – being underwater; understands that this catastrophe will have a detrimental impact on the country, with 1,100 people already dead, and around one in seven Pakistanis affected, around 33 million people in total; further understands that one million homes have been destroyed or badly damaged, leaving many people homeless and exposed to the elements; considers that there is an urgent need for world leaders to provide humanitarian assistance so that people’s basic needs, such as food supplies, and access to clean water and shelter, can be met; notes the launch of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Pakistan Floods Appeal, which brings together 15 leading UK charities to raise funds quickly and efficiently, including Islamic Relief Scotland, Oxfam Scotland, the British Red Cross, Tearfund, Save the Children and Christian Aid Scotland; recognises the reported need for more funds to address people’s most urgent needs, which, it understands, include access to clean water, food, emergency shelter, health assistance, sanitation and hygiene, protection, cash assistance and immediate disaster response, such as the distribution of life jackets, and encourages anybody who wishes to support Pakistan at this difficult time to donate to the Disaster Emergency Committee Pakistan Floods Appeal.
