Scotland in Europe

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.

  • Motion reference: S6M-05796

That the Parliament congratulates Celtic and Rangers on reaching the group stages of the men’s football UEFA Champions League; notes that there are 32 teams from 15 nations at this stage of the competition and eight nations have one team representing them; further notes that one nation, Germany, has five teams in the competition, and three nations, England, Italy, and Spain, are represented by four teams each, while Portugal has three teams and Scotland and France have two each; considers that this is a tremendous achievement for one of Europe’s smaller countries; accepts that this does not happen every season; believes that this is further evidence that Scotland can well stand on its own two feet as a country in Europe, need not fear larger and richer nations, and wishes Rangers, Celtic, and Hearts continued success in Europe this season.
