Passing of Sally Beaumont

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 03 August 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05569

That the Parliament notes with sadness the passing of Sally Beaumont; understands that, over a period of eight years, Sally welcomed 25 asylum seekers into her home and helped to inspire others to do the same; further understands that as a refugee herself, Sally was evacuated to Canada during the Second World War and that in her later years, after returning to Glasgow, was keen to help others who found themselves in similar situations; is grateful to Sally for becoming one of Positive Action in Housing's longest standing volunteers and for her involvement in establishing the Room for Refugees programme run by the charity, which, it understands, has sheltered more than 4,000 refugees; notes Sally's wider commitment to peace and justice; believes that this was exemplified by her membership of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament since the 1950s, her arrest for protesting outside Faslane nuclear base and her involvement in the Iona Community, and is thankful for Sally's many contributions to help make Scotland and the world a more welcoming place
