  • Submitted by: Mark Ruskell, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 19 May 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-04481

That the Parliament celebrates the 30th anniversary of the EU’s Natura 2000 Network; understands that the EU adopted the EU Habitats Directive and the LIFE programme in 1992, which led to the introduction of the EU-wide Natura 2000 Network; further understands that the Natura 2000 Network is the world’s largest coordinated network of protected areas, covering nearly 18% of the EU’s land area and more than 9% of the EU’s marine area; understands that 65% of the EU population lives within 5km of a Natura 2000 site, and commends BirdLife Europe, RSPB and the coalition of NGOs and volunteers involved in protecting and restoring the natural environment, fauna and flora within the network.
