Glasgow Space Technology Funding

  • Submitted by: Dr. Sandesh Gulhane, Glasgow, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 11 April 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-03972

That the Parliament welcomes UK Space Agency funding for two Glasgow space technology projects, to help pioneer new approaches to energy, communications and resources; notes that Scottish company, Braided Communications, in Glasgow, will receive £100,000 to advance deep space communications; understands that Braided Communications has invented a new tool to tackle communication delays between earth and space; further understands that this remarkable innovation will allow participants, in earth to space calls, to experience a normal, synchronous conversation; applauds that such advancements in deep space communications technology will, it understands, improve crew health and performance during exploration class missions; recognises that the University of Glasgow will receive £85,000 to develop a new deep-drilling concept; understands that exploration of the surface of another planet often requires drilling into the soil with a rotating drill string, using significant power and heavy rotating equipment; further understands that the University of Glasgow project will explore whether a new approach, based on vibration, can be used to extract material without rotation, reducing the mass of future space exploration landings and, in turn, allowing quicker and cheaper deployment, and applauds that support funding for both projects will help UK scientists and engineers to continue to make significant strides in space exploration and discovery.
