Amnesty International Report: Israel's Apartheid Against Palestinians - Amendment

  • Submitted by: Jackson Carlaw, Eastwood, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 23 February 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-03059.1

As an amendment to motion S6M-03059 in the name of Mercedes Villalba (Amnesty International Report: Israel's Apartheid Against Palestinians), leave out from "acknowledges" to end and insert "understands that Israel is a country with a strong and flourishing democracy, affords equal rights to all of its citizens, is committed to international law, has a free press, and is open to scrutiny; recognises that the composition of Israel's government today is, it considers, a powerful reflection of the country's democracy and its inclusive society; acknowledges that the country's existing government highlights what it sees as the diversity of Israeli society and is, it understands, comprised of representatives from many different groups across the nation including people who are Jewish, Arab, secular, religious, disabled, LGBT, immigrants, and second-generation Holocaust survivors; disagrees firmly with the description of Israel as a country with a system of apartheid in what it considers as the deeply disappointing paper published by Amnesty International; disputes what it considers as the characterisation that the State of Israel was established on the basis of discrimination between Jews and Arabs and believes that any such discourse of this nature does not provide sufficient understanding and knowledge of the country's founding; believes that the democratic State of Israel was established with broad international support as the nation state of the Jewish people and, among other things, when reflecting on the lessons of the Holocaust; unequivocally supports the continued existence of the State of Israel, and backs a two-state solution as the best way to achieve a sustainable peace and wider stability in the Middle East."
