Aquaculture producers may operate a range of community funds and finance schemes to which local communities can apply. Scottish Government does not routinely collect or hold the details of individual contracts and funds.

Crown Estate Scotland has a remit to generate lasting value for Scotland from the natural resources in its care. Rents due from aquaculture leases granted by CES were reviewed in 2022 and following that “root and branch” review they have recently increased. The Scottish Government is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of teachers and education professionals impacted by violent and abusive behaviour in schools. Violence is never acceptable, and the safety of both pupils and staff is paramount. No staff members should have to endure verbal or physical abuse in educational settings.

As part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to ensure schools are safe and consistent environments for all, we are currently working with partners to develop a national action plan which will include consideration of what further support local authorities and schools may require. The action plan will be published as soon as possible.

In addition, since October 2020, we have allocated over £2 million to specifically support the wellbeing of the education workforce. This year, an additional £200,000 is earmarked to provide wellbeing coaching to teaching staff and educational professionals in Scottish schools and early learning facilities.

Moreover, we are funding the Association of Directors of Education in Scotland to implement an Education Workforce Support Project, aimed at gaining a comprehensive understanding of current practices supporting the wellbeing of our education workforce.

A wide range of aquaculture research is published by universities and research institutes, both in Scotland and globally, including research by public bodies such as SEPA, as well as the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate. Summaries of research are published by the Scottish Government Marine Directorate and SEPA on their websites and peer reviewed publications by all scientists may be accessed through a range online academic journals.

We are committed to making science as accessible as possible. The Scottish Shelf Model is a good example of a shared resource with vast array of applications which can be used by developed by the wider science community. We are working together to consider future aquaculture science evidence needs. Last year, I commissioned the Scottish Science Advisory Council (SSAC) to consider the use of science and evidence in aquaculture consenting. I look forward to working with stakeholders to further consider the recommendations made by the SSAC in their report this year.

The Scottish Government takes a serious and proactive approach to road safety and has a specific procedure (Management of Occupational Road Risk (MORR) contained within the organisation’s Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) policy.

The purpose of the MORR procedure is to ensure the organisation meets its obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, to protect not only staff, but also other road users.

Included in the procedure are a number of steps to identify, mitigate and manage the risks associated with occupational driving, including: promotion of correct mode of transport e.g. consideration if driving is the most appropriate option, conducting and regularly reviewing risk assessments for all aspects of driving activities, annual e-learning Driver Safety Awareness training, completion of annual self-declaration forms, and being formally authorised to drive for official business prior to driving for work purposes.

Staff specifically employed to drive as their main work objective are required to complete an initial driver assessment as part of the recruitment process, and are also provided with additional training and work towards ROSPA advanced driver certification.

This delivers a proactive, supportive approach to the associated risks, and promotes transferable skills and experience which can be utilised outwith the work environment.

All new fleet vehicles are specified with the latest driver safety aids, wherever possible, and vehicles are maintained, as a minimum, in accordance with manufacturers recommended guidelines, and are frequently inspected to ensure they are in a safe and serviceable condition at all times.

We also have a policy where tyres are replaced when they reach below 3mm, which is well above the legal threshold of 1.6mm.
