Parliamentary questions can be asked by any MSP to the Scottish Government or the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body. The questions provide a means for MSPs to get factual and statistical information.

To ask the Scottish Government what response it has received to the publication of Scotland’s Place in Europe.

The Scottish Government has received a range of positive responses from across business, education, environment, health and legal sectors to the publication of Scotland’s Place in Europe on 20 December. They recognise that our proposals represent a serious and a genuine attempt to build consensus and to unify the country around a clear plan to protect Scotland’s interests.

Indeed, Professor Sir David Edward, former Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Communities highlighted upon publication that:

“I believe that the Scottish Government is right to urge the UK Government to maintain the UK’s position within the Single Market, the Customs Union and the various forms of security and police co-operation. That is the primary proposal and I believe it merits the widest support across the political spectrum.”

“..I urge everyone who cares for the future of Scotland to read the Scottish Government’s paper with an open mind.”

To ask the Scottish Government what action it is taking to encourage employers to pay at least the living wage.

On 12 March 2016, the First Minister set a new target of 1,000 Living Wage Accredited employers by Autumn 2017, we are supporting this by increasing funding for the Scottish Living Wage Accreditation Initiative to £300,000 and are working with the Poverty Alliance to support them in meeting this target.

Following on from Living Wage Week which began on 31 October the number of Living Wage Accredited employers in Scotland rose to 650. Scotland remains the best performing of all four UK countries with the highest proportion of employees paid the Living Wage or more (79.9%).

To ask the Scottish Government how much it has invested in organisations that help improve the lives of LGBTI people.

Since 2011, the Scottish Government has invested almost £5 million (£4,953,102) in LGBT organisations across Scotland. This funding helps to inform policy development on key priority issues for the LGBTI community, promote equality for LGBTI people and address prejudice and discrimination. As well as providing frontline services, this funding supports engagement with communities, builds capacity building and helps to support leadership in relation to LGBTI issues across Scotland.

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide an update on progress toward achieving its target of 500 living wage employers.

Earlier this month (during the SNP Conference on 12 March 2016), the First Minister announced that the target of 500 Scots-based living wage accredited employers has been achieved ahead of schedule. This is thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Poverty Alliance team who have worked tirelessly over the last few years to sign up as many employers as possible, and who are now working towards achieving a further target of 1,000 accredited employers by autumn 2017.

These efforts are part of the reason why Scotland has the highest proportion of people paid the living wage outside the South-east of England.

And this is why I am delighted to announce that the Scottish Government will increase our funding to the Scottish Living Wage Accreditation Initiative, pledging a further £300,000 to this important project in an effort to ensure as many people, and employers, as possible can benefit from the ‘real’ living wage.
