To ask the Scottish Government what instructions the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning and his officials have issued to the Scottish Qualifications Authority regarding the subject content to be included in the new National 5 and higher English examinations.
Answer
As announced on 25 January 2012, Ministers accepted the recommendation of the Scottish Studies Working Group that a specific element on Scottish texts should be included in the external course assessment for the new Higher English courses. This was later extended to National 5, and officials advised SQA of this decision.
Decisions on how this recommendation was implemented remained with SQA through their established qualifications development processes working within the Curriculum for Excellence Framework.

To ask the Scottish Government how much additional funding would be required to support students from the rest of the UK studying in Scotland if the country became an independent member of the EU and what discussions it has had regarding this.
Answer
There are approximately 20,000 students from the rest of the UK studying for a first degree at Scottish universities. If all of these students were to qualify for regulated places as EU students then the cost of providing these places would be approximately £150 million.
To date, there have been no substantive discussions on this matter.
