Parliamentary questions can be asked by any MSP to the Scottish Government or the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body. The questions provide a means for MSPs to get factual and statistical information.

To ask the Scottish Government what action it is taking in relation to the situation in Gaza.

The Scottish Government is extremely concerned about the escalating violence in Gaza and its disproportionate impact on civilians. It is crucial that both sides calm the situation and a long term ceasefire is agreed.

I announced on 30 July 2014 that the Scottish Government is providing £500,000 in humanitarian aid, to help people affected by the crisis in Gaza.

What we need in Gaza is an immediate lasting end to the violence. On Tuesday 5 August 2014 I called for an immediate embargo on arms sales to Israel. The UK must conduct an immediate investigation into whether or not UK arms have been used in any violation of international law. I once again encourage the UK Government to implement a complete suspension of arms sales to Israel until this has been done.

We wrote to David Cameron calling on him to show equal determination in the UK Government’s approach to the situation in Gaza as they have shown in regard to the atrocity involving Malaysian Airlines flight MH17. A request was also made to support an UN investigation into civilian deaths as a result of the conflict.

I wrote to Secretary of State for the Home Office, Rt Hon Theresa May MP, on 18 July 2014, highlighting that Scotland stands ready to play its part in helping to welcome and resettle refugees from Gaza into our communities.

I wrote to the then UK Foreign Secretary William Hague on 9 July 2014 to offer the use of Scottish hospitals to treat patients requiring specialist care as a result of the conflict.
