To ask the Scottish Executive what steps have been taken to introduce consistency into the management of rivers bounding Scotland and England.

Answer
Each river catchment requiresdifferences in management to reflect local circumstances; the border rivers areno different in that respect. The legislative basis for the management of the borderrivers has been consistently applied since 1865.

To ask the Scottish Executive whether it has been consulted on the proposed privatisation of air search and rescue services and, if so, what concerns it expressed.

Answer
Control and tasking of theair search and rescue service is a reserved matter and will remain with the UKGovernment. No consultation took place. The Department for Transport andMinistry of Defence (MoD) initiated a competition under the Private FinanceInitiative, and the service will continue to be managed jointly by the Maritimeand Coastguard Agency and the MoD. The Scottish Executive has responsibilityfor managing the consequences arising from civil emergencies and works closelywith the UK Government and a variety of organisations in ensuring emergency preparedness.

Answer
The rolling average for the period2002-04 shows that 43% of people aged 17 to 24 took part in sport more than twicea week. These figures pre-date the introduction of Active Schools and itmust be recognised that it will take time for the programme to impact on this agegroup.
The method of measurement forthis figure is the same as that set out in response to question S2W-14291 on 17 March 2005. Sportscotlandhopes to be able to publish shortly, statistics on participation for the periodup to 2005.
