To ask the Scottish Government what steps it has taken to ensure that community eyecare services are being accessed fairly by those who rely on domiciliary visits and those who live in remote and rural locations.
Answer
As set out in the answer to S6W-17550 on 12 May 2023, officials are in the process of providing advice to Scottish Ministers on community eyecare services work, including the unique challenges of providing these services in remote and rural areas and domiciliary settings.
In addition, as part of the continuous review of service provision, the Scottish Government recently worked with stakeholders to undertake a separate report into supporting the sustainability of community eyecare services in remote and rural areas.

To ask the Scottish Government how many patients have been referred to the designated providers in (a) Bristol and (b) the USA for mesh removal surgery by the Complex Mesh Surgical Service in Glasgow, broken down by year.
Answer
Since October of last year, 29 women have been approved for referral to the independent providers. For reasons of patient confidentiality, this is not broken down by provider. To date, 13 surgeries have been carried out.

To ask the Scottish Government how it plans to ensure alignment between the expected renewed cancer strategy, which is overseen by the Cabinet Secretary for NHS Recovery, Health and Social Care, and the extant Children and Young People's Cancer Strategy, which is overseen by the Managed Service Network for Children and Young People with Cancer.
Answer
I am accountable to parliament for both strategies. A dedicated strategy to support young people with cancer, “Collaborative and Compassionate Cancer Care, The Cancer Strategy for Children and Young People in Scotland 2021-2026”, was published in 2021 and is the first NHS Scotland strategy for this age group.
The implementation and delivery of this strategy is supported by the Managed Service Network for children and young people with cancer (MSN CYPC), which was established to support the specialist delivery of cancer care and support required by children and young people with cancer.
The MSN has representation on various national groups which impact both adult and children cancer patients. In addition, Scottish Government officials sit on the MSN Executive groups to ensure direct alignment across both strategies.

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will extend the contract of Dr Veronikis, in light of reports that very few, if any, NHS Scotland patients have been referred to designated providers in the USA for mesh removal surgery.
Answer
As indicated in response to S6W-17504 and S6W-17508 on 11 May 2023, a number of women have been referred to the independent providers and have undergone surgery. The present contracts with the providers are due to conclude at the end of August. However, NHS National Services Scotland is undertaking a procurement process to renew contracts with the independent providers of mesh removal surgery for a further year. To ask the Scottish Government how many NHS Scotland patients have had mesh removal surgery in each of the last three years.
Answer
NHS Scotland patients requiring transvaginal mesh removal surgery may opt either to have that surgery carried out by the specialist service provided by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, by an NHS England specialist centre, or by one of two independent providers. 23 removal surgeries were carried out by the Glasgow specialist service in 2020-21, 23 in 2021-22, and 34 in 2022-23. Meanwhile, as noted in response to S6W-17504 on 11 May 2023, 13 women have had removal surgery carried out by one of the two independent providers. None have opted for referral to an NHS England centre.
